Bandeja technique: control, slice and follow-through
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I improve my bandeja control and slice?
Keep your preparation high and close to your body with your elbow pointing toward the fence. Freeze your racket before the hit and focus on a long, slow follow-through to generate more slice and keep the ball low.
What this lesson covers
Effective bandeja control relies on keeping the ball low and slow, ensuring the second bounce lands before the service line. Players often struggle by standing too close to the ball, which forces a rushed, flat strike. To improve, move away from the ball to create space, allowing for a longer, controlled swing. Keep the preparation compact and frozen before initiating the forward motion to avoid excessive speed. A higher preparation, with the elbow facing the fence, helps generate more slice and better control compared to a wide, flat preparation.
The non-dominant hand plays a vital role in balancing the body and shortening the swing. Keeping the left hand close to the body keeps the racket closer, which is essential for maintaining control. Focus on a high-to-low motion, aiming to follow through long toward the target. When receiving a high lob, maintain the high elbow position and avoid the temptation to over-swing. Aiming for the opponent's feet or the corners makes the return significantly more difficult for them. This lesson is suited for players who already possess a powerful smash but need to develop a more controlled, tactical bandeja.
