Chiquita defense: identifying the trap
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I defend against a soft chiquita?
Don't buy the trap by hitting from below the net. Take a step back to gain control, then slice the ball into the middle gap.
What this lesson covers
A soft chiquita forces a player to hit from below net level, resulting in a weak, popped-up return. When the opponent plays a slow, short ball, avoid the temptation to rush forward. Instead, take a step back to regain control of the situation. This distance allows for a cleaner strike and better court vision.
Once in a stable position, aim a slice into the middle gap. If the opponent rushes the net aggressively, hold the shot briefly to let them commit to their movement, then play a fast ball past them. A chiquita only works when preceded by a deep lob that pushes the opponent back, creating enough space to hit with pace. This approach forces the opponent to play from below the net, making the ball difficult to return.
