Defensive positioning and wall play technique
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I improve my defensive positioning and wall play?
Prioritize early racket preparation and move to the correct position before the ball bounces. If the ball is slow, step back to ensure you hit it in front of you.
What this lesson covers
Defensive play relies on early racket preparation and precise court positioning. When a ball approaches the side glass, the player must move to the correct spot before the bounce to ensure the ball stays in front. If the ball is slow, taking a step back helps maintain a clean contact point. When the ball is fast, staying in position is often sufficient. Racket height must match the ball height to keep the trajectory low and prevent the net player from attacking.
The turn is necessary when the ball travels toward the left foot, requiring an initial step toward the corner to get behind the ball. Avoiding T-rex arms, where the elbows stay too close to the body, is vital for a fluid swing. Rushing the shot often leads to errors, so slowing down the movement allows for better control and placement. Proper preparation includes keeping the racket distance from the body consistent, similar to the spacing required for a bandeja, to ensure the ball is struck in front of the player. Focusing on one initial step during practice helps automate footwork, allowing the player to concentrate on tactics during a match.
