Serve and first volley: tactics and coordination
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I coordinate the serve and first volley with my partner?
You must know exactly where your partner is serving so you can adjust your position at the net. If they serve to the T, close the middle to cut off the return; if they serve to the glass, prepare to volley into the middle or toward the fence.
What this lesson covers
The serve acts as the primary tool to control the rhythm of the point. A high contact point maximizes the serve trajectory and allows the server to dictate play. Instead of focusing solely on hitting the side glass, the server targets the opponent's weaker side, such as the T or the backhand, to force a difficult return. Coordination between partners remains vital to maintain pressure from the start.
The net player creates pressure by standing close to the net before the serve, forcing the opponent to attempt a lob or a precise return. When the serve lands at the T, the net player closes the middle to prepare for a volley into the corner. If the serve goes to the glass, the net player anticipates a volley to the middle or a short ball to the fence. Constant communication and practice between partners ensure these transitions become automatic.
