Tactical structure: focus on one player
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I beat better padel players?
Focus your shots on one specific player to force them to move constantly. Build the point slowly with soft, precise shots and only look to finish when you have created an opening.
What this lesson covers
Building a structured game involves targeting a single opponent consistently rather than hitting random angles. When at the net, move a defender from side to side. When at the back, force the net player to move forward and backward. This consistency forces the opponent out of position and creates opportunities to finish the point. Precision and soft shots are preferred over raw power, as high-speed shots often rebound too far off the glass, allowing the opponent to counter.
Points are constructed through a build-and-destroy phase. Avoid rushing to score; instead, use soft volleys or chiquitas to move the opponent and wait for the right moment to strike. When defending, play toward the center to limit the angles the opponent can use. If the opponent is positioned far from the net, avoid lobs and play down to force them forward. Walking on the court rather than rushing helps maintain composure and allows for better decision-making.
