Volley depth and court positioning control
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I maintain net pressure with long volleys?
Keep the ball behind the white line to stop lobs and stay forward after your volley. Do not step back, or you will leave space for the opponent to play a short ball.
What this lesson covers
The coach instructs players to maintain the ball behind the white line during volleys to prevent opponents from hitting lobs. Keeping the ball deep forces the opposition into a defensive state and limits their options. Players must avoid retreating after a deep volley, as moving backward creates gaps in the net position that the opponent can exploit with a drop shot or a lob.
When hitting a smash, the player must recover forward quickly enough to be ready for the next ball. If the recovery is too slow, the player remains vulnerable to a counterattack. The coach advises playing with patience rather than forcing power from a poor position. Only when the player is well-balanced and in a strong position should they attempt to hit the ball with high intensity. This lesson is for players who struggle with maintaining net pressure after a deep volley.
