Anticipation and movement: reading the opponent
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I anticipate my opponent's next move to reach the net faster?
Stay on your toes with your heels off the ground. If you are on your heels, you will lunge instead of moving quickly, so keeping your weight forward makes a huge difference in your reaction time.
What this lesson covers
Recognizing opportunities starts with active footwork. Keeping the heels off the ground ensures the player remains on the toes, allowing for explosive movement toward the net or into defensive positions. When the opponent is at the back, the player must wait for the right setup ball before closing the net. Rushing forward too early leaves too much space behind.
Reading the opponent requires observing body language during the smash. A gancho hit over the left side often travels toward the side glass with little spin. A bandeja contacted high and close to the body typically heads toward the corner with slice. An aggressive flat smash travels forward with pace. Improving footwork and anticipation allows the player to react to these variations effectively. This lesson is for players looking to transition from static positioning to active, reactive movement at the net.
