The backhand serve offers a way to change rhythm and keep the ball low against the side glass. It works best for right-handers on the left side of the court, where the slice trajectory pulls the ball toward the glass. Players can use body momentum during the swing to transition forward into the net position. However, the serve requires a consistent ball toss and creates a visual disadvantage because the player must look over their shoulder to track the opponent's box.
Technique requires a side-on stance with the racket taken back early to allow for a full swing. Contact occurs in front of the body, which necessitates dropping the ball forward. Players struggling with timing can start with the racket in a mid-section position rather than a full backswing. Accuracy remains the primary challenge, as the serve is difficult to control compared to a standard forehand serve. When returning this serve, anticipate a low bounce near the glass. Keep the racket head low and open to dig the ball out effectively. This serve only provides an advantage if the player possesses a reliable, high-quality slice.
