Backhand volley: weight transfer and depth
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I improve my backhand volley power and depth?
You must transfer your weight by stepping forward with your right leg at the moment of impact. Do not rely only on your arm, and aim for the baseline to keep your opponent from hitting a lob.
What this lesson covers
The backhand volley requires a specific movement pattern to generate power and maintain control. Players often load their weight onto the left leg during the preparation phase but fail to transfer that force forward. To correct this, the right leg must step into the shot at the moment of impact. This forward movement allows the player to attack the ball rather than relying solely on arm motion.
Depth is a secondary priority for a consistent backhand volley. Aiming for the baseline prevents the opponent from hitting a lob, which is a common risk when the ball lands short and bounces high. When facing high-speed shots, a shorter preparation and a blocking technique with shoulder rotation are preferred over a full swing. Positioning further back from the net provides extra time to prepare for these faster incoming balls, especially when the opponent hits with pace.
