Changing shot speed for unpredictability
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I use shot speed to make my game more unpredictable?
You should aim to hit every shot differently from the previous one. If you hit a fast ball to the body, follow it with a chiquita or a lob to disrupt your opponent's rhythm.
What this lesson covers
Unpredictability from the back of the court relies on varying shot speed and intention. Hitting at a single pace allows opponents to settle into a rhythm, whereas alternating between fast balls to the body and soft chiquitas forces them to defend their volleys. A chiquita only succeeds when paired with a consistent lob, as the threat of the lob creates the space needed to bring opponents forward to the net.
This principle of variation extends to the front of the court. Volleying fast and flat consistently allows opponents to anticipate the ball and let it hit the back glass. Mixing these fast volleys with soft shots that die near the back glass or angled shots into the corners keeps opponents off balance. Experimentation during matches is the primary method for integrating these changes in rhythm. The goal is to force an easy ball that allows for a safe transition to the net, rather than attempting to hit through opponents.
