What this lesson covers
Selecting a side depends on tactical roles rather than comfort with back glass returns. A traditional pair consists of a right-side player who prioritizes defense, patience, and lobbing to create openings, and a left-side player who acts as the primary finisher. The left-side player covers the middle of the court and uses aggressive overheads to end points. When hitting these overheads, the left-side player targets the crosscourt corner to maintain a fast recovery to the net position.
Left-handed players should consistently occupy the right side to keep their forehand and overheads in the center of the court. For right-handed players, the recommendation is to practice both sides during the learning phase to develop a complete game. This versatility allows players to adapt to different partners. When pairing with a stronger player, the more advanced partner typically takes the left side to handle the finishing duties, while the right-side player supports by maintaining stability.
