Common Padel Mistakes: Net, Footwork, and Overheads
Key takeaway from our Guru
What are the most common mistakes that cause players to lose points in padel?
You lose points by staying in no man's land after a serve, running backward for lobs, and hitting overheads too close to your body. To fix these, always advance to the net, turn sideways for every overhead, and wait for the ball to be in front of you.
What this lesson covers
Players often fail to advance to the net after serving, effectively remaining in no man's land where balls bounce at the feet. Moving to the net allows for better court coverage and offensive positioning. When tracking a lob, running backward with the chest facing forward restricts movement and power. Instead, turn sideways immediately to prepare the racket and engage the whole body for overheads like the bandeja or vibora.
Tennis players frequently struggle with long, fast swings from the back of the court. A compact swing is faster and more effective for generating power in the smaller padel court. When playing off the glass, rushing leads to hitting the ball too late. Use footwork to get close to the glass, allowing the ball to travel in front of the body before contact. Finally, high-rebounding bandejas often result from hitting the ball directly above the head. Moving away from the ball to strike it at eye level, further to the side, creates a flatter trajectory and a lower, more difficult bounce for the opponent.
