Court coverage: team positioning and communication
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I know if I should take a ball in the middle?
You should take the ball if you are in the best position to play it effectively. Communicate early by calling mine so your partner knows to cover the space you are leaving behind.
What this lesson covers
Effective court coverage relies on identifying which partner holds the superior position to play the ball rather than adhering to rigid side assignments. When a player is forced against the side glass, the partner must shift toward the center to cover the middle. If a ball hits the side glass and deflects toward the partner, the partner takes responsibility to avoid leaving the court wide open. This principle applies to defensive lobs and aggressive smashes that bounce off the side glass into the center of the court.
At the net, partners move as a unit to maintain coverage of the line and the center. The player closer to the ball or in a better position to strike should take the shot, provided they communicate clearly and early. When opponents hit lobs that force a retreat, players must anticipate the trajectory and coordinate based on who can reach the ball faster. Success depends on observing opponent patterns and adjusting team positioning to ensure the court remains protected while maintaining the net position.
