Lob defense: positioning and decision making
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I improve my defensive lob response?
Turn sideways and move back the moment you see the opponent go under the ball. Commit to your chosen overhead shot early to avoid indecision and always recover to your home base immediately after contact.
What this lesson covers
Defending a lob begins with immediate movement. As soon as an opponent moves underneath the ball, the player must turn sideways and take a fast step back. This initial movement is universal regardless of the final shot choice. Deciding between a bandeja, vibora, gancho, or flat smash happens only after this initial retreat.
Decision making relies on two factors: the angle of the incoming ball and its depth. Balls coming toward the open side often dictate a bandeja or vibora, while balls drifting toward the closed side may require a gancho or topspin smash. Deep lobs that bounce high are best played off the back glass rather than as an overhead. Once a decision is made, commitment to the chosen shot is necessary to avoid indecision and weak contact.
Recovery is the final phase of the process. Players must return to the center of the court immediately after contact rather than watching the ball. This habit ensures the team remains balanced and ready for the next phase of the rally.
