Net defense: blocking hard shots and low balls
Key takeaway from our Guru
How do I defend against hard shots and low balls at the net?
Stop trying to attack every ball. When the opponent hits hard, block the ball by keeping your racket in the middle and pushing with your hip, and when the ball is low, use a soft drop-shot touch to keep it at their feet.
What this lesson covers
Defending at the net requires a shift from an attacking mindset to a defensive one. When an opponent hits the ball hard, the goal is to block it rather than swing. Keep the racket in the middle of the body and push straight up with the hip, avoiding pendulum-like swings. Do not move the feet forward when defending hard shots, as this often leads to errors. Instead, maintain a stable, low position, similar to a soccer goalie, to manage the pace.
Low balls require a different approach. Because a standard volley technique often causes the ball to float, use a drop-shot motion or a soft touch to keep the ball low at the opponent's feet. If the opponent is far from the net, aim for their feet; if they are close, hit a lob. The objective is to return the ball consistently rather than trying to win the point immediately. By keeping the ball in play and forcing the opponent to make a mistake, you gain control of the rally and wait for an easier ball to apply pressure.
