Net position: finding the ideal distance

Players often drift too far back from the net during a rally. This creates a gap that allows opponents to hit the ball at the feet, forcing a defensive half-volley. Conversely, standing too close to the net leaves significant space behind, making it easy for the opponent to execute a lob that lands before the service line. Both extremes compromise the ability to control the net effectively.

The ideal net position is located near the second post or one step in front of it. From this spot, a player maintains the flexibility to step forward to attack an easy ball or retreat to defend against a lob. Constant awareness of court positioning allows for better decision-making during the point. When the opponent hits a difficult ball, moving forward allows for an aggressive volley, while anticipating a lob requires an immediate step back.
