Return technique: body weight and split step timing
Key takeaway from our Guru
How can I improve my return of serve against deep or side-glass balls?
Shift your body weight forward by taking a small step just as the server makes contact. When dealing with a ball that slides off the side glass, strike it immediately upon contact with a firm, locked wrist and a short follow-through.
What this lesson covers
The coach demonstrates how to improve the return of serve by shifting body weight forward rather than relying solely on the arm. Players often retreat when facing deep serves because they lack the time to move forward. The solution involves starting from the back glass and executing a small step forward just as the server hits the ball, allowing the player to land in a split step with their weight already moving toward the net. This approach uses the legs for 60 percent of the power, keeping the arm relaxed and the wrist firm.
For serves that hit the side glass and slide away, known as the aceitosa, the coach teaches a quick-reaction block. As soon as the ball touches the glass, the player must strike it immediately with a short, compact motion. The wrist remains locked to prevent the ball from hitting the fence, and the player turns their head away at impact to avoid potential injury from a mis-hit. This drill is best suited for players struggling with deep serves or difficult side-glass rebounds.
